October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Artesia General Hospital

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is the perfect time to schedule your mammogram! With appointment hours from 7:30 am to 5 pm to fit your busy life, and convenient online appointment requests, we make it easy to prioritize your health this October.

Don’t know when to begin receiving mammograms or how frequently you should schedule appointments? If you are at average risk for breast cancer, follow these easy guidelines:

  • Women ages 40 to 44 do not need a referral to receive a mammogram, and may start annual breast cancer screenings if they wish to do so.
  • Women age 45 to 54 should get mammograms every year.
  • Women age 55 and older may switch to mammograms every 2 years—or may choose to continue yearly screening.
  • Screenings should continue as long as a woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 more years or longer.

Women are at higher risk for breast cancer if they have a personal history of breast cancer; a family history of breast cancer; a genetic mutation known to increase risk of breast cancer (such as BRCA); or have had radiation therapy to the chest before the age of 30. Consult with your gynecologist or primary care physician for screening recommendations.

All women should be familiar with how their breasts normally look and feel and report any changes to a health care provider right away.
