Meet Peter Jewell, MD
We are pleased to welcome Peter Jewell, MD, to our family medicine practice. Dr. Jewell started his career in radio before pursuing a medical degree at Ross University School of Medicine in Dominica, followed by a residency at the University of New Mexico. Even though he just recently moved his practice to Artesia, Dr. Jewell cared for our community members for more than a decade out of his previous practice in Roswell. In fact, more than 300 patients followed him to Artesia General Hospital (AGH)—a testimony to the lasting relationships he’s built by providing trusted, quality care.

Why did you become a doctor and what drew you to family medicine?
I always liked helping people, but I didn’t become a doctor until I was 40. I was working in Chicago as a producer for a radio talk show and just wasn’t happy. I decided to go back to school and pursue my dream of making a difference in the lives of others. When I started my rotations, I found that I enjoyed moving around and always doing something different. I really like the variety that comes with family medicine.
How would you explain family medicine?
The best way to explain it is if you have anything that’s wrong, I’m most likely the first person you’ll see and the person who will give you a diagnosis. I also work closely with specialists. It’s great to be here at AGH where I already know so many of our incredible doctors and team members. And it’s important to note that in addition to helping people when they are injured or sick, I care for them when they are healthy. I provide physical exams and wellness checks for all ages, as well as preventive maintenance and counseling.
What does it mean to be able to provide care for all family members?
That’s really the whole prize, isn’t it? Taking care of an entire family, no matter their age and stage of life. I’ve seen patients from ages 1 to 90, and it’s not uncommon for me to care for multiple generations within a family, which can be really helpful if there’s a genetic disease. It’s a joy to see kids grow up from toddlers to teenagers, and to get to know parents and grandparents.
How do you help your patients feel comfortable and at ease?
Through empathy and strong communication. I’ve had my fair share of health issues: I’ve survived heart disease, I’ve lived with diabetes for more than 40 years, and I’ve undergone several orthopedic surgeries. These experiences help me relate to many of my patients and play a big role in my approach. I honor each patient, I listen intently and with an open mind, and it’s very important to me that my patients fully understand their health, their treatments, their medications and their path forward.
Why would you recommend a patient choose Artesia General Hospital for primary care?
I really believe that here, it’s about quality of care and not quantity of care. We are united in putting people first.
What life accomplishment are you most proud of?
Going back to school and becoming a doctor.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Getting positive feedback from my patients. And even just having great conversations. So much of being a good doctor is listening, which means hearing interesting stories. I love building relationships with the people I have the privilege of caring for; it really makes a difference.
What do you do for fun?
I’ve been learning the guitar, something that’s quickly become a favorite pastime. I also enjoy cooking, and you can find me skiing in the winter.
What words would you use to describe yourself?
Caring, open, communicative, non-judgmental and empathetic.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our colleagues?
I’m really happy to be here. Everyone has welcomed me with open arms—at the hospital and in the community. Even small things, like colleagues saying “good morning” in the hallway, have been refreshing. I finally found a place I know I’ll call home for a long time.
