A hospitalist is a physician who specializes in the care of hospitalized patients. Most hospitalists are trained in internal medicine, but some may come from other specialties like family medicine or pediatrics.
Manage the entire inpatient experience, from admission to discharge
Coordinate care with specialists, nurses, and other hospital staff
Monitor and adjust treatment plans based on patients’ daily progress
Respond quickly to changes in a patient’s condition
Ensure smooth transitions of care—such as arranging follow-up with a primary care provider
Hospitalists don’t see patients in clinics or private practices—they only work inside the hospital
They are available onsite, often 24/7 in shifts, which allows for immediate care and attention
In short, a hospitalist is like the quarterback for inpatient care, ensuring patients get the right treatment quickly and efficiently while they’re in the hospital.
