    Name: Chris Spencer
    Position and Department: Director of Information Security

    In his own words

    I’ve been working in IT for over 12 years in multiple roles, including Helpdesk, Network Administrator, System Administrator, Supervisor, Management and Director. Each position required me to maintain security best practices and stay updated on the latest technology and security trends. I have 7 technical certifications, 2 of which are security-specific, and I’m currently enrolled at Western Governors University, pursuing a Master’s of Science in Cyber Security and Information Assurance.

    What inspires and motivates you to work in health care?
    IT in health care is ever-evolving and brings exciting challenges daily. I appreciate the opportunity to add value by applying the tools and techniques I’ve mastered over the years.

    Can you briefly describe what your role at Artesia General Hospital entails?
    My role involves monitoring and securing AGH’s intellectual property, data and assets of by continuously monitoring of network traffic and fine-tuning the configuration of servers and networking equipment. I also provide feedback to the CIO, along with suggestions for tools, policies, processes and procedures to help improve daily operations.

    What is the most rewarding part of your job?
    The most rewarding part is learning new things and sharing information to the rest of the team. I really enjoy looking back after a year and seeing the progress made within the environment.

    What is something you want others to know when it comes to Artesia General Hospital?
    I’ve worked here before, and I see the hospital advancing and maturing in its processes and services. It truly takes everyone’s participation and belief to grow in the way that AGH has over the years.

    What is the most meaningful piece of feedback/advice you’ve received in your career?
    The minute you think you’ve learned it all is when you should consider retiring. Technology will continue to evolve, and you need to continue to learn to keep up.

    What words would you use to describe yourself?
    Motivated, honest, and passionate.

    What are your favorite things to do outside of work?
    I enjoy traveling with my wife, making music, and playing with the latest technology.
