Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the difference between a therapist and a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner?

This is a great question. While both are vital to mental health, they serve different functions. A therapist or counselor typically provides “talk therapy” to help you develop coping strategies. A Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is a medical provider who can diagnose conditions, provide therapy, and also prescribe and manage medications. Our team consists of PMHNPs who offer comprehensive medical management of your mental health.

Is my treatment confidential?

Absolutely. Your privacy is protected by the same strict patient confidentiality laws (HIPAA) that cover all other medical care. We provide a safe and private space for you to discuss your concerns. Your information will not be shared without your express written consent, except in specific situations required by law to ensure your safety or the safety of others.

What should I expect during my very first appointment?

Your first appointment is primarily a conversation. You’ll meet with one of our providers, who will ask questions about your symptoms, your personal history, and what you hope to achieve. They will listen with empathy and without judgment. This initial assessment helps us create a personalized and effective treatment plan for you. It’s a collaborative process where your voice is the most important part.

How do I know if I or my child needs to see a behavioral health professional?

If you or your child are struggling with emotions, thoughts, or behaviors that are interfering with daily life—such as work, school, relationships, or overall happiness—it may be time to seek help. Common signs include persistent sadness or worry, extreme mood swings, difficulty sleeping, or losing interest in things you once enjoyed. Reaching out is the first step toward feeling better.

Do you prescribe medication at the first visit?

Not always. A prescription is only recommended after a thorough evaluation determines that it is an appropriate part of your treatment plan. The decision to start medication is made collaboratively between you and your provider. The goal is always to find the most effective and least invasive treatment path for your specific needs.
