    Continuing Medical Education Now Available

Artesia General Hospital has officially earned accreditation to provide accredited Continuing Medical Education (CME) in southeast New Mexico. With Initial Provisional Accreditation granted by the New Mexico Medical Society (NMMS), AGH can now offer locally recognized educational activities for physicians, nurses, technicians, and allied health professionals  through May 2027.

NMMS Recognizes AGH’s CME Program Strengths

In its accreditation decision, NMMS highlighted several key strengths of AGH’s CME program:

    • Leadership by a committed group of experienced educators and physicians
    • Engagement of expert presenters with specialized clinical knowledge
    • A strong, interdisciplinary, team-based approach to continuing education

The provisional status over the next two years will allow AGH to further enhance program components, such as measuring long-term educational impact, identifying learning gaps among participants, and expanding partnerships with other healthcare institutions in the region.

A Milestone for Local Medical Education

AGH Chief Medical Officer and Endocronologist Dr. Robert Ferraro led the application process and emphasized why this accreditation is a significant milestone:

“This accreditation reflects our commitment to supporting the growth of our medical team and improving care across the region,” said Dr. Ferraro. “We know that continued education leads to better outcomes, and now we can provide that education right here in our community.”

Accredited CME activities ensure healthcare providers stay current with evolving standards of care, emerging medical technologies, and evidence-based practices. By offering CME locally, AGH reduces the burden of travel for clinicians—eliminating long drives or overnight stays that can disrupt schedules and add expense—while fostering stronger collaboration among community-based providers.

Local access to CME makes ongoing training more convenient. It also encourages interdisciplinary participation. Physicians, nurses, technicians, and allied health professionals can learn together and share real-world insights. In rural settings like Artesia, Carlsbad, Roswell, and surrounding areas, accessibility is critical. Clinicians in small or remote communities often face staffing challenges and limited coverage, so finding time for distant conferences can be difficult. By delivering accredited education closer to home, AGH helps providers enhance their skills. They can discuss region-specific health concerns, such as telehealth best practices, and implement new protocols promptly. Ultimately, this improves patient outcomes and strengthens the quality of care in southeastern New Mexico.

    Next Steps and Program Development

Over the coming months, AGH will build on this initial accreditation by:

    • Developing a comprehensive schedule of Continuing Medical Education offerings across multiple clinical disciplines
    • Integrating feedback from staff and external partners to fine-tune course content
    • Enhancing evaluation tools to measure long-term educational outcomes and learning gaps
    • Expanding data-driven planning to ensure each activity meets regional needs
