Safe Haven Baby Box installation moves forward

Artesia Special Hospital District and Artesia General Hospital Break Ground on Life-Saving Safe Haven Baby Box – will Provide Anonymous, Legal, and Safe Option for Infant Surrender in Artesia, New Mexico.

ARTESIA, NM – Artesia General Hospital (AGH), in partnership with the Artesia Special Hospital District, has officially broken ground on the installation of a Safe Haven Baby Box—marking a significant step forward in supporting newborn safety and maternal crisis care in the community.

This Safe Haven Baby Box will provide a secure, legal, and completely anonymous option for mothers in crisis who may feel they have no other choice. Once installed, the box will offer a safe location where a newborn can be surrendered without fear, shame, or legal consequences—ensuring the infant receives immediate medical attention and is connected to long-term care.

“This isn’t just about a box—it’s about compassion, dignity, and saving lives,” said AGH CEO Dr. Joe Salgado. “In the most difficult and overwhelming moments a parent might face, this box will stand as a life-saving option and a message to them that they are not alone.”

Each Safe Haven Baby Box is climate-controlled and equipped with a silent alarm system that immediately alerts on-site medical personnel when the door is opened. This ensures that babies placed in the box are typically retrieved and cared for within minutes, with complete privacy for the parent.

The installation is being made possible through the collaboration between AGH and the Artesia Special Hospital District, whose shared vision is to provide compassionate, proactive healthcare resources for the community.

“We are honored to partner with AGH on a project that directly supports the most vulnerable members of our community,” said Jarrod Moreau Chair of the Artesia Special Hospital District. “Every child deserves a chance at life, and every parent deserves access to safe options, even in their most desperate moment.”

Once installation is complete, the community will be invited to a ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially unveil the Safe Haven Baby Box and honor the efforts that brought this important resource to Artesia. Updates on the project timeline and event details will be shared in the coming weeks.
