About Marshall Baca, MD
Marshall Baca, MD is a board-certified orthopedic surgeon at the Artesia General Hospital Bone and Joint Center in Artesia, NM, also seeing patients at the orthopedic clinic in Carlsbad. Dr. Baca cares for patients across Artesia, Eddy County, Carlsbad, Roswell, and southeastern New Mexico. He treats the full range of orthopedic conditions, from sports injuries and fractures to advanced hip and knee replacement, and he was among the first surgeons in the region to adopt and champion Mako robotic-arm assisted joint surgery.
Dr. Baca earned his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston in 1990 and completed his residency at Texas A&M Scott and White. He is fellowship-trained in pediatric orthopedics through Baylor College of Medicine and is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.
Dr. Baca has cared for the Artesia and Carlsbad area for more than three decades. He also helped shape the region’s orthopedic future by bringing fellow surgeon Dr. Zhinian Wan to Artesia General Hospital, giving southeastern New Mexico one of the most experienced robotic joint replacement teams in the state.
Dr. Baca speaks Spanish, so patients and their families can talk through diagnosis, surgery, and recovery in the language they are most comfortable with (habla español).
Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Joint Surgery
For many patients with arthritis or joint damage, Dr. Baca uses Mako robotic-arm assisted technology to plan and perform hip and knee replacement with a high degree of precision. The Mako robot does not operate on its own. Before surgery, a CT scan builds a 3D model of your joint, the procedure is mapped to your own anatomy rather than a standard template, and the system gives Dr. Baca real-time guidance during surgery that helps protect the healthy bone and soft tissue around the joint.
“Using the Mako allows me to tailor each joint replacement to the patient’s unique anatomy.” Dr. Baca offers Mako for total knee replacement, partial knee replacement, and total hip replacement. For the right candidate, this approach supports more accurate implant positioning and a recovery focused on returning to the activities you enjoy.
If you are weighing joint replacement, you can learn more about Mako joint surgery at AGH or call the Bone and Joint Center at (575) 748-8301 to ask whether you are a candidate.
Sports Medicine
Dr. Baca is also a sports medicine surgeon. From high school athletes and weekend runners to ranch and oilfield workers whose jobs wear on muscles, bones, and joints, he treats the sprains, strains, fractures, and overuse injuries that keep people in Artesia, Carlsbad, and Roswell from the work and activities they love. When an injury needs surgery, he offers arthroscopic (minimally invasive) procedures of the knee, shoulder, ankle, and elbow, including ACL and rotator cuff repair.

Does Dr. Baca perform Mako robotic joint replacement?
Yes. Dr. Baca was among the first surgeons in the region to adopt Mako, and he performs Mako robotic-arm assisted total knee, partial knee, and total hip replacement at the Artesia General Hospital Bone and Joint Center. You can learn more about Mako robotic knee replacement and what recovery looks like.
Does the robot perform the surgery?
No. Dr. Baca performs your surgery. The Mako robotic arm is a precision tool that helps him carry out the plan, giving real-time guidance and resistance-based feedback during the procedure, but every cut and every decision is made by the surgeon. The system cannot move on its own and stays under Dr. Baca’s control at all times.
Am I a candidate for joint replacement?
You may be a candidate if you have hip or knee arthritis that limits daily activities and has not improved with conservative care such as medication, activity changes, or physical therapy. Dr. Baca reviews your history, examines the joint, and uses imaging to decide whether a partial or total replacement is right for you. The best way to find out is to schedule an evaluation at the Bone and Joint Center.
How long does a joint replacement last?
Most modern hip and knee replacements are designed to last 20 years or more, and published joint registry data shows more than 90% of implants still working at 20 years. How long yours lasts depends on your age, weight, activity level, and overall health. During your consultation at the Bone and Joint Center, Dr. Baca will talk through what you can expect and how to protect your new joint for the long term.
Can patients from Roswell and elsewhere in southeastern New Mexico see Dr. Baca?
