About Dr. Shyamal Pansuriya

Dr. Shyamal Pansuriya, DO is a board-certified general surgeon at Artesia General Hospital, caring for patients across Artesia, Carlsbad, Roswell, and southeastern New Mexico. He is trained in open, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted surgery, and he treats a wide range of general and gastrointestinal conditions, from hernias and gallbladder disease to colorectal surgery. He completed his General Surgery residency at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital and is a graduate of Marian University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Pansuriya is certified on the new da Vinci 5 robotic surgical system, the newest generation of surgical robotics now at Artesia General Hospital, so patients in southeastern New Mexico can have advanced minimally invasive surgery close to home.

Dr. Pansuriya also brings a unique dual background in science and economics to his practice, having earned Bachelor of Science (Honors Biology) and Bachelor of Arts (Economics) degrees from McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, where he graduated summa cum laude. That foundation supports an evidence-based, systems-oriented approach to surgery and patient care.

Da Vinci 5 Robotic Surgery at Artesia General Hospital

Artesia General Hospital has invested in the da Vinci 5, the newest generation robotic surgical system, so patients in southeastern New Mexico can access advanced minimally invasive surgery close to home instead of traveling to a larger city. Dr. Pansuriya is certified on the da Vinci 5 and performs a range of general surgery procedures using this technology.

With the da Vinci 5, the surgeon sits at a console and guides small instruments and a high-definition 3D camera through a few tiny incisions. The system translates the surgeon’s hand movements into precise instrument motion. For many patients, a minimally invasive approach can mean smaller incisions, less pain after surgery, and a quicker return to everyday activities, though the right approach always depends on your individual case.

Dr. Pansuriya uses the da Vinci 5 for procedures such as hernia repair, gallbladder removal, and colorectal surgery. Dr. Shyamal Pansuriya has developed specialized experience in treating complex gastrointestinal conditions, including colorectal cancer, diverticular disease, and bowel obstructions. He is proficient in robotic-assisted procedures and minimally invasive techniques and holds certifications in Fundamentals of Laparoscopic Surgery (FLS), Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES), and Fundamentals of Critical Care Support (FCCS). His robotic surgery equivalency certification (DaVinci platform) is currently pending.

Beyond the operating room, Dr. Shyamal Pansuriya is a published researcher with a strong interest in rare surgical cases and surgical outcomes. His research has been presented at more than 15 national conferences, including the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons (ASCRS), Southeastern Surgical Congress (SeSC), and Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES). Dr. Pansuriya has co-authored several peer-reviewed publications, including in The American Surgeon, on topics ranging from cystic duct anomalies to post-traumatic cardiogenic shock.

Additional Information

Dr. Pansuriya is deeply invested in medical education and mentorship. He has served as Medical Student Coordinator at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital, Adjunct Clinical Faculty for Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Treasurer of the Marian University Research Club. Dr. Pansuriya has organized surgical skills labs, mentored medical students, and advocated for graduate medical education as part of the Macomb Resident Consortium and Central Venous Access Committee.

He is also an alumnus of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons’ Mentor-Mentee Program, where he trained under the guidance of colorectal expert Dr. Brian Teng. His surgical philosophy emphasizes individualized care, patient empowerment, and a commitment to advancing rural surgical access.
