    In honor of Nurses Week, we’re shining a spotlight on Stephen Flores, RN—an exceptional member of our nursing team at Artesia General Hospital. Known for his clinical expertise, calm leadership, and genuine compassion, Stephen represents the spirit of nursing at its best. This week, we’re celebrating the stories of dedicated professionals like Stephen who make a lasting impact on our patients, their families, and our entire community every single day.

    At Artesia General Hospital, we believe great care starts with great people—and Stephen Flores, RN, is one of those people. With a strong foundation in clinical nursing and an ever-growing commitment to patient-centered care, Stephen brings both skill and heart to his work every day.

    From CNA to RN: A Journey of Dedication

    Stephen began his healthcare journey as a Certified Nursing Assistant, gaining hands-on experience in long-term care and rehabilitation. His passion for helping others quickly became clear, and he went on to earn his Nursing Degree from Northern New Mexico College in 2012 after attaining a BA in Health from New Mexico Highlands University in 2008.

    Throughout his career, Stephen has remained committed to lifelong learning. He is currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program at Chamberlain University, with an expected graduation in Fall 2025, further deepening his expertise and leadership in clinical care.

    Clinical Skills and Compassionate Care

    Stephen’s nursing journey spans over a decade and includes a wide array of specialties. He has spent 12 years in intensive care (ICU)—with 9 years as a charge nurse and 4 years as a travel ICU nurse, providing high-level critical care in diverse hospital settings. His experience also includes emergency medicine, medical-surgical care, surgical services, infusion therapy, behavioral health, hospice, and home health.

    Most recently, Stephen has taken on roles in education and leadership, serving as both an educator and manager for the medical-surgical unit. In this role, he supports team development, mentors new nurses, and helps shape a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.

    His responsibilities have included:

    • Administering medications and IV therapy
    • Responding to critical patient needs
    • Monitoring vital signs and interpreting lab data
    • Collaborating closely with physicians and interdisciplinary teams
    • Leading care teams and mentoring staff
    • Supporting patients and families through complex health journeys

    Beyond his clinical expertise, Stephen is known for his calm demeanor, strong communication, and a patient-first philosophy. His colleagues rely on his steady leadership, and his patients appreciate the respect, empathy, and professionalism he brings to every interaction.

    A Strong Connection to Community

    Having graduated from Artesia High School, Stephen maintains a strong connection to the Artesia community. His familiarity with the unique challenges and strengths of Southeast New Mexico enhances his ability to deliver personalized, compassionate care.
