We are proud to announce that ER Nurse Jewel Garrett, RN is our latest DAISY Award winner.
In the fast-paced world of healthcare, the Emergency Room is often associated with speed, equipment, and split-second decisions. For patients and families in crisis, though, it can also be a place of fear and heartbreak.
It is in these moments that the art of nursing becomes just as vital as the science. Recently, we had the privilege of recognizing a nurse who blends clinical skill with extraordinary compassion.
A Hard Day, A Human Connection
Jewel’s nomination came from a grateful patient who came to our Emergency Room during a miscarriage. It was one of the hardest days of the patient’s life.
She and her husband arrived frightened and unsure of what would happen next. From the very first moment, Jewel stepped in and went to work.
“From the moment I met Jewel, she got right to action. She made sure to make me as comfortable as possible.”
Jewel Garrett and the Power of Presence

For many patients, the fear of the unknown is the hardest part. Jewel recognized this right away.
Instead of rushing, she explained everything that would happen, and she made sure the family understood each step. She turned clinical details into clear, comforting words, and that helped the family face a frightening day.
More Than Words
What truly set Jewel apart was her attention to emotional well-being. She did not simply complete her tasks, she stayed present through the hardest moment of all.
“She gave me the biggest hug once we lost our child, and reminded me that everything was going to be okay. That meant the world to me.”
In her nomination, the patient added a simple thought: the world needs more people like Jewel. She leads with heart and a true passion to serve.
What Our Leaders Are Saying
Michele Petersen, MSN, BSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Artesia General Hospital, was not surprised by the recognition.
“This is who our nurses are. Jewel showed the compassion, skill, and presence that define nursing here at AGH. We are proud of her, and we are grateful to the patient who shared this story.”
Jessica Scoggin, RN, our Emergency Department Director, shared that pride.
“Jewel treats every patient like family. She gives people comfort, clarity, and dignity on their hardest days. Honestly, no one deserves the DAISY Award more.”
Honoring Jewel Garrett’s Extraordinary Care
Jewel exemplifies the values that the DAISY Foundation stands for. She turned a clinical moment into a deeply human one. Sometimes the most powerful medicine is a steady presence and a caring touch.
