Name: Nelva Tidwell
Position and Department: Director of Public Relations and Development
How long have you worked at Artesia General Hospital? Since July, 2023.
In her own words
Can you briefly describe what your role at Artesia General Hospital entails?
My role is to make sure people in our community and the surrounding areas know about our services and feel comfortable and confident seeking care with us. I am also always looking to build partnerships with local businesses and organizations, along with exploring ways to improve our community’s health.
Are there any upcoming projects you’re most looking forward to?
AGH and AGH Foundation have so many fun projects on the horizon! The Artesia Heart Walk is on Saturday, Sept. 16, and everyone is invited to attend. This event is dear to me because of close friends and relatives who have recently experienced heart disease. The proceeds go to the American Heart Association to further scientific research and program development.
We are also working on employee and community events to take place before the end of the year! Some will be educational and others just good old fun for the entire family.
What inspired you to take this position at Artesia General Hospital?
I grew up in Artesia and raised my family here. Three of my five grandchildren live in Artesia. I can’t think of a more rewarding job than knowing I’m working to ensure they, and others in that generation, have access to the best health care in the region.
Speaking of: What does it mean to you to be back in your hometown?
During the 14 years I lived away, I still referred to Artesia as home. There is no better feeling than to be home surrounded by family and lifelong friends!
What is one of the most important lessons you learned from a person or experience?
It was an honor to care for my elderly mother during the last years of her life. She and my dad taught me so many lessons about unconditional love, family and being there for others as we travel through different chapters of life. A few of those tenets include: life is short so enjoy it to the best of our ability, try to be better than we were yesterday, and enjoy precious moments as often as we can.
What stands out to you about the culture at Artesia General Hospital?
How much they care about patients and their families. The people who work at AGH are the heart of this hospital, and they are truly invested in the people they see and the services they provide. It is an honor to work alongside them.
What do you love most about our Artesia community?
The people are the best! They are constantly supporting and encouraging each other. Artesia is like a big extended family. My husband Vann and I love being back!
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Dedicated, empathetic and caring.
