Employee Spotlight: Marshall Baca Jr., DO

We’re highlighting the amazing work of our Emergency Department and our Medical Director answered a few questions about his career and what makes Artesia General Hospital special.

    In his own words

    Name: Marshall Baca Jr., DO
    Positions and Departments: Medical Director
How long have you worked at Artesia General Hospital? 6 Years

When did you choose a career in medicine and what drew you to the specialty of emergency medicine?
I initially earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a double major in Marketing and Entrepreneurship and a minor in Spanish. After working in the wine industry right out of college and trying to start my own wine business, I decided the wine business wasn’t for me. Subsequently, I worked in Medical Sales which drew me to the field of medicine. During clinical rotations in my 3rd year of medical school, I found myself being drawn to multiple specialties. Emergency Medicine offers the ability to treat a vast patient population and I’ve learned that there is never a dull moment in the Emergency Department.

What is one of the most important lessons you’ve learned throughout your years of practice either from a mentor or experience?
Balance is key! Balance between your professional life, spouse, family, kids, personal time, etc, is very important to sustaining happiness and fulfillment.

When working with a patient who is nervous, how do you help them feel more at ease?
The Emergency Room, by nature, is nerve-racking for most people. I think the most important thing to do is to make sure the patient and medical staff are on the same page regarding the patient’s reason for visiting, and ensure all of their questions are answered.

Why should someone choose Artesia General Hospital in an emergency?
We have a great team of physicians, nurses, and ancillary staff who all take pride in their jobs. This results in extraordinary care for those who choose Artesia General Hospital.

What stands out to you about the team or culture at Artesia General Hospital?
Many of our staff members are originally from the area. I genuinely feel this translates into more of a personal feel when you come to Artesia General Hospital as a patient. I think we all strive to serve the community the best we can.

What is your favorite thing to do outside of work? Or what is a fun personal fact about you?
I married my high school sweetheart! We’ve been together for 23 years, and married for 15 years. We have three incredible kiddos who are all involved in sports and other extracurricular activities. Most of my time spent outside of work is figuring out how to keep up with them!
