AGH signs Baby Box agreement for Artesia

Artesia General Hospital (AGH) has taken a step toward expanding community health and safety by signing an agreement with Safe Haven Baby Boxes (SHBB) to bring a Safe Haven Baby Box to Artesia.

The agreement, signed last week by AGH CEO Dr. Joe Salgado and Project Manager Jeremy Kern, launches the process that will lead to the installation of this important resource. Over the coming months, construction and inspections will move forward, with a community announcement planned once the Baby Box is fully ready for use.

A Commitment to Families with the Baby Box

“This has been a long journey to reach today,” said Project Manager Jeremy Kern. “We are thrilled to begin this crucial next step—another demonstration of Artesia General’s commitment to meeting the changing needs of our community.”

“I am once again proud of our hospital for leading the way in the Pecos Valley. Addressing this vital issue head-on speaks volumes about who we are and what we value.” Said CEO Dr. Joe Salgado.

    How the Baby Box Works

Safe Haven Baby Boxes are climate-controlled, secured devices installed on the exterior of hospitals or fire stations. When a newborn is placed inside, internal alarms immediately alert medical staff, who respond within minutes to provide care. The system offers parents a safe, secure, and anonymous option while ensuring infants are protected and cared for right away.

Founded in 2015, SHBB works nationwide to prevent unsafe infant abandonment by raising awareness of Safe Haven Laws, operating a 24-hour crisis hotline, providing first-responder training, and educating communities.

“We are honored to partner with Artesia General Hospital to extend this lifesaving resource to the Artesia community.” Said Monica Kelsey, SHBB founder and CEO.

    Building Together

AGH has partnered with Permian Construction, led by owner Scott Taylor, as the general contractor for this project. A groundbreaking ceremony is planned later this month to celebrate this milestone.

“I’m excited to collaborate with Artesia General on another community-centered initiative,” Taylor said. “This project underscores our shared commitment to safety, compassion, and positive impact.”

    Looking Ahead

With the addition of the Baby Box, Artesia joins communities across New Mexico that are expanding access to safe surrender resources. Currently, there are 10 Baby Boxes installed statewide, each offering peace of mind to parents in crisis and immediate care for newborns. The Artesia installation will build on this network, further strengthening support for families in southeastern New Mexico.
